Sweden

Visa: Schengen Area Free Visa Check

Language: Swedish. English is spoken fluently by virtually everyone.

Currency: Swedish Krona (SEK). Cards are accepted everywhere. Many cafés and shops are entirely cashless. You may not touch physical money your entire trip.

Transportation:

Train: SJ runs the national network. High-speed trains connect Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. The overnight train to Kiruna (Lapland) is a classic experience.

Bus: FlixBus serves major routes. Vy operates regional buses in the north.

City transport: Stockholm's SL access card covers metro, buses, trams, and even some ferries. The Stockholm metro stations (Kungsträdgården, T-Centralen) are world-famous art installations in their own right.

What To Expect

Sweden is Scandinavia's design-forward, fika-obsessed powerhouse. Stockholm is built across 14 islands connected by bridges, earning it the nickname "Venice of the North." The Gamla Stan (Old Town) is a warren of cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings. The Vasa Museum houses a 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage and was recovered nearly intact 333 years later. It is genuinely one of the best museums in the world.

Sweden's second city, Gothenburg, is smaller and cooler, with a thriving food scene, the excellent Liseberg amusement park, and access to the wild archipelago islands. Up north, Kiruna and Abisko offer the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is rebuilt from scratch every year from blocks of ice harvested from the Torne River.

The Swedish concept of fika is not just a coffee break. It is a cultural institution. A cinnamon bun (kanelbulle) and a coffee, taken slowly with company or alone. Sweden is not cheap, but the quality of life, the design, and the effortless style make it worth the kronor.
