What To Expect
Singapore is the city-state that proves efficiency and excitement are not mutually exclusive. This tiny island nation has transformed itself from a colonial trading post into one of the most futuristic cities on earth. Marina Bay Sands and the Gardens by the Bay supertrees define the skyline, but the real Singapore lives at street level in its hawker centers.
The food is the main event. Singapore's hawker centers are UNESCO-listed and for good reason. A plate of Hainanese chicken rice costs a few dollars. A bowl of laksa, a plate of char kway teow, a Michelin-starred soy sauce chicken from a stall with plastic chairs. Eating is a national sport and the best meals cost less than a cocktail at a rooftop bar.
Beyond the food, Singapore rewards exploration. Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam each offer a different sensory experience within walking distance of each other. The Botanic Gardens (another UNESCO site) provide a green escape, while Sentosa Island offers family-friendly beaches. Singapore is small enough that you can explore deeply in three days and expensive enough that staying longer hurts.
